Bud has been in the horse industry basically his whole life. His father, Bud Sr., started raising Quarter Horses and Paints in the middle 1960’s. Bud Sr. focused on the foundation cow horse blood lines of King and Poco Bueno. He felt that with the Poco Bueno’s trainable attitudes, confirmation, and cow sense that this was where he wanted to focus his breeding program. He started with a buckskin stud named Poco Orlo x Poco Polo to Poco Bueno and that was where the Quarter Horse end of it started taking shape. On a 300 acre farm in eastern South Dakota, having some 20 brood mares, there was always a colt or two that needed to be started. Bud Sr. always took in a few outside horses to start as well.
Bud, having 2 older brothers, (Clay and Claude) and 1 older sister (Renee) was always watching and ready to lend a hand as he watched his father and his brothers and sister start and work with the young horses. He had the chance to witness first hand, tried and true horsemanship passed on from his father to his brothers and sister. With
almost a 10 year difference in age between Bud and his siblings it was time for him to take the reins and start helping Dad at the age of 9. Bud began helping his Dad start poa’s that summer. From that summer on, Bud has been breaking and training horses. “We had the reputation of being able to break the bad ones”, so for the next 10 years Bud and his Dad took all comers, four and five year old studs that were not halter broke or the ones that had been to several other trainers and labeled “untrainable.” They never sent a horse home that wasn’t a different horse.
In Bud’s middle teen years he caught the rodeo bug. He rode barebacks, saddle broncs and bulls throughout his high school years, and then because of some nagging shoulder injuries quit the barebacks and bulls and focused primarily
on saddlebroncs. While rodeoing, Bud started colts to pay entry fees and the bills. He rode saddlebroncs into his early 30’s when a broken right femur in 2003 ended his rodeo career. He continued starting colts full-time but was looking for more.
Bud always liked the Reining Horse because of all of the finesse and hard work in training the reiner and geared his training program in that direction. In 2004 Bud was married to Bobbi Jo. Bobbi Jo had been very successful in the show pen competing in Showmanship, English, Hunter Jumper, Western Pleasure, Western Riding, and Trail. She also competed in the rodeo arena in Breakaway Roping, Heeling, Ribbon Roping, Goat Tying and Barrel Racing. In 1997, she set an arena record in Fort Pierre, South Dakota in the
Ribbon Roping event with a time of 6.13 seconds. In 2003, Bobbi Jo won the South Dakota Quarter Horse Association All-Around Amateur title as a result of 5 Amateur All-Arounds, 5 Reserve Amateur All-Arounds and an AQHA Register of Merit along with multiple Amateur Circuit Championships.
Bud and Bobbi Jo began competing exclusively in reining events in 2004 and found their passion. To further his reining career and enhance his training methods, he has rode
with several top professionals such as Bob Loomis, Brian Bell and Will Howe. His hard work and dedication has paid off. To view a list of accomplishments see our News and Updates page. In May 2009, they decided to relocate to Florida to expand Bud’s business and be able to ride comfortably year round.
They are members of the National Reining Horse Association, Florida Reining Horse Association , South Florida Reining Horse Association and Florida Quarter Horse Association and have been strong and competitive in the Florida show pen. In 2012 Bud and Chex Out Ned Pepper (a stallion raised and trained by Bud) finished Top 10 in the NRHA Limited Open World Standings. In 2013 Bud and Ned finished Reserve World Champion NRHA Limited Open and Bobbi Jo and Lady With a Pistol (another mare trained exclusively by Bud and Bobbi Jo) were Reserve World Champions in the NRHA Rookie Professional division. Their son, Ace, was also 2013 Top Ten in the NRHA Youth 13&under division. Bud has furthered his training program to include NRHA Futurity Prospects and is specializing in this area of expertise with much success!
Bud Roebuck is a down-to-earth, practical horse trainer. He enjoys the company of others and is always willing to lend a hand to help a fellow horse enthusiast. His years of experience in the horse industry and integrity are just a couple reasons why his customers continue to bring him multiple horses through out the years and some even travel over 1700 miles to have him ride their horses. Bud welcomes the opportunity to answer any questions someone may have and all are welcome to come and visit his facility and take a look around anytime.
Bud would like to thank his wife and kids, his mom and dad, and his mother and father-in-law, Steve and Jacquelynn Naatjes, for all their support and encouragement. Bud wouldn't be as far and accomplished as he is today without their assistance, utter confidence in him, and loving motivation!
